Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Short n’ Sweet’ is every bit of short, and not that sweet

The former Disney Channel star, Sabrina Carpenter, has done it yet again with her new album ‘Short n’ Sweet’ bringing her album count to six. The album at first listen is one that is full of catchy lines and humorous takes on many of her relationships with men and the feelings that surround them. ‘Bed Chem’ is a song featured that Carpenter filled with punch lines and innuendos hinting at her budding relationship with movie star Barry Kheogan. “Come right on me. I mean camaraderie.” may be the best play on words that has been put out in pop music in a very long time. However, with familiar hit songs like ‘Espresso’ and ‘Please, Please, Please’ there was an initial confidence mustered going into listening to the album that it was going to be a good one.

The album itself only comes to a short 36 minutes and 15 seconds, which definitely fits the ‘Short n’ Sweet’ title. However, it is definitely no comparison time wise to Frank Ocean’s ‘Channel Orange’ at 62 minutes and 18 seconds. Needless to say, there are hits on this album, and there are songs that are going to be stuck in your head that make you smile, but this album is not telling you stories or taking you on emotional roller coasters. It falls short of anything memorable that isn’t a joke or a dig at people.

Overall, the album does what it strives to, which is make songs that stay in your head, and create hits that are at the top of the charts and radio stations. The album also does a great job at showcasing the different styles that Carpenter is capable of with traditional pop, some notes of rock, and even some country thrown in there on the song ‘Slim Pickins’. The songs themselves are pretty and catchy, they do not flow well from song to song with different beats going on, and complete accent changes as well. “Since the good ones are deceased or taken, I’ll just keep moaning and bitching.” featured in the song ‘Slim Pickins’ showcases a country accent Carpenter has put on herself to almost play a character in her album, which may be short, but is certainly not very sweet.

***this was an assignment for class but I wanted to share some of my genuine thoughts on the album because it was good, but we live in such a bandwagon culture that I thought it would be good to share an opposing opinion***
